Google Notebook Import Tool Complete!

We are happy to announce that we have completed the UberNote Google Notebook Import Tool! This is a long post broken down into a section for Export, Import and Using UberNote.

Export
First we are going to export your notebooks out of Google Notebook.

1. Go to Google Notebook
2. Select "Manage Notebooks" from the left hand side, under your list of notebooks.
3. You should now see export options next to the notebook names. Select "export" on the notebook you want to export.

4. From the export options, choose "Atom"

5. Save this file to your computer.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for each Notebook you want to export.

Import
Next we are going to import the files you just created, into UberNote.

1. Go to Settings on the top of your account and click on the Google Notebook Import link. Or go directly to this link

2. Select your notebook files you exported, then click Import.

3. UberNote will then import your notebook and you'll see a results screen similar to the image below:

4. If you want to import more notebooks just click on the "Import another Google Notebook file" and start again.

Using UberNote

Google Notebook's layouts and organization is different from UberNote, so we tried to preserve your information as much as possible.

Notebooks - Every notebook you import into UberNote will have a Tag with the notebook name. All the notes are ordered the same way you had them in your notebook. So if you click on the Tag with the notebook name from the left menu in UberNote, you should see your notebook in practically the same way.

Sections - Sections in Google Notebook were used to subdivide areas inside individual notebooks. We chose to not import these as tags because sections are specific to the Notebook. Instead the Section name along with the Notebook it came from will show up on the first line of a note.

Notes - Obviously the reason you are importing notebooks in. Each note in your imported notebooks will display as individual notes in UberNote.

Labels - Labels in Google Notebook will be imported as Tags in UberNote.

If anyone has any comments, questions or problems with the tool please let us know!

Hi

The "Manage Notebooks" link is on the 'other right' hand side.

When I try and export my notebook it tells me that it is temporarily unavailable. The export to Atom does not appear to be working.

Cheers
Michael

I am having difficulty exporting my google notebook.

I hit Export -> Atom
And then I get redirected to a page that says
"This feed is not available for public viewing."

Re: Michael

Thanks for the comment. It's been corrected.

Re: Jason Dever

A couple people have told us that too. Hopefully Google will fix it.

I am awaiting it to work, but I like what I see so far. Any Google Chrome goodies you are working on?

Hi,

I've just imported my notes from Google Notebook and I don't know how to manage the sections. ¿How can I rename them or create a new one? ¿Is there any way to organize the notes by section?
Another thing: I've imported two different google notebooks, ¿how can I distinguish notes from one or another notebook?

Thanks

I don't have sections in my Google notebooks. I exported all the notebooks as Atom and imported them back in Ubernote. Worked as advertised. Thanks!

I am looking for a replacement for Google Notebook, have tried Evernote and it is not quite right. I think UberNote might do the job and I have opened an account but have just read a comment here about differentiating between different Google Notebooks imported. Oh dear!

Note being able to group individual notes by "Section" is a bind for public UberNotes.

A bigger problem is that I have over 40 Google Notebooks and about half are either public or shared.

(The "tag" system in combination with multiple Google Notebooks under one account and use of Sections makes it easy to "share" individual notes across Google Notebooks if necessary, which is a very handy feature).

Am I right in thinking that the only way to replicate my separate Google Notebooks in UberNote and KEEP them separate, so that some can be shared and some kept private, is to create a separate UberNote account for each Google Notebook?

Fingers crossed that this is not so and that I have misunderstood!

We have some things in the works that will make this better in terms of notebook separation.

Many thanks for the reply, Hozer :-)

I have been experimenting with Google Reader but it too is lacking in the features tha made Google Notebook work. What strange people they are.

I do think that you are doing a lovely job with UberNote and you are obviously interested in understanding how people use it. Makes a nice change :-)

Best wishes and many thanks again,
