Backup and Export Your Notes

I was reviewing our user feedback and one of the voted features that came to my attention was Export Notes. I was a bit surprised to see it there because we have a feature that handles this request. Then I realized we could do a better job at presenting some of these features, which is the reason for this blog post.

(*If you have tried this before and had issues with how long it takes, the download has been drastically improved)

Directions to backup / export your notes

  1. After you are logged in, go to the Settings and Tools link at the top.
  2. On the right hand side there is our Import / Export area.
  3. Click the Backup link and save the HTML file to your computer.
Tips and Advantages
  • Since it's an HTML file, you can view it offline with any browser.
  • Use your browser's search function to find specific notes.
  • Your UberNote backup is readable without any additional software.
  • Feel better that you have a copy.
Enjoy!

I still have a big problem with the export feature. A single html file is certainly better than nothing. But if you have hundreds/ potentially thousands of notes carefully organised into tagged groups, then you're lost with a single file. Isn't 'organising' your notes the whole point of programs like ubernote? Being honest, the export function is vital for one reason... security for the user should Ubernote shut down, or should the user decide to move his/her notes to a different program. Being tied into one system is no good. The more sophisticated the export function, the more comfortable the user will feel about sticking around indefinitely. Please keep up the good work!

Re: James
Thank you for the comment and the honesty. Our first goal out of the single HTML file was readability for most users, but we understand it is far from ideal for import into other systems. We are working on a better format that should be much more portable for other systems.
