UTF-8 Support in Emails and Google Notebook Importer

Our email receiving service (where you send in emails that are converted to notes) and our Google Notebook importer now support UTF-8 in all note contents, titles and tags.

We are proud to support UTF-8 throughout UberNote and welcome all international users.

Duplicate tags fixed

Last week we asked users if they had issues with duplicate tags. As of today, that issue has been resolved for everyone in the system.

Do you have a duplicate tags issue?

In certain instances if you imported multiple Google Notebooks with the same tags, you may have ended up with duplicate tags in your UberNote account.

If this happened to you please email feedback (at) ubernote (dot) com with "DUPLICATE TAGS" in the subject and your user name in the body.

This issue has been fixed so new imports won't have the same issue.

Fixed: Google Import "Error parsing Atom export file"

Thanks to our users informed us about importing issues so quickly, we have fixed all the known issues.

If you came across the "Error parsing Atom export file" we have addressed it as of 11:00AM EST. So please try it again.

Also if you had any issues with importing notes that were just bookmarks, where they came up blank. We fixed that one around 2am EST.

Lifehacker: Finds UberNote as the first Google Notebook importer

Lifehacker mentions UberNote in their post Import the Entirety of Your Google Notebook to UberNote:

"It's a good bet that every note-taking tool looking to grab new users will create a similar tool now that Google Notebook has stopped active development, but UberNote looks like the first."

Google Notebook Import Tool Complete!

We are happy to announce that we have completed the UberNote Google Notebook Import Tool! This is a long post broken down into a section for Export, Import and Using UberNote.

Export
First we are going to export your notebooks out of Google Notebook.

1. Go to Google Notebook
2. Select "Manage Notebooks" from the left hand side, under your list of notebooks.
3. You should now see export options next to the notebook names. Select "export" on the notebook you want to export.


4. From the export options, choose "Atom"

5. Save this file to your computer.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for each Notebook you want to export.

Import
Next we are going to import the files you just created, into UberNote.

1. Go to Settings on the top of your account and click on the Google Notebook Import link. Or go directly to this link




2. Select your notebook files you exported, then click Import.


3. UberNote will then import your notebook and you'll see a results screen similar to the image below:

4. If you want to import more notebooks just click on the "Import another Google Notebook file" and start again.




Using UberNote

Google Notebook's layouts and organization is different from UberNote, so we tried to preserve your information as much as possible.



Notebooks - Every notebook you import into UberNote will have a Tag with the notebook name. All the notes are ordered the same way you had them in your notebook. So if you click on the Tag with the notebook name from the left menu in UberNote, you should see your notebook in practically the same way.

Sections - Sections in Google Notebook were used to subdivide areas inside individual notebooks. We chose to not import these as tags because sections are specific to the Notebook. Instead the Section name along with the Notebook it came from will show up on the first line of a note.

Notes - Obviously the reason you are importing notebooks in. Each note in your imported notebooks will display as individual notes in UberNote.

Labels - Labels in Google Notebook will be imported as Tags in UberNote.

Like Google Notebook you can us it to grab bits and pieces of pages you're on, or simply as a storage space for collaborative writing and bookmarking. It also employs tags to let you sort and search through your content."

Building a Google Notebook Importer

If you saw our Twitter update, you'll know that we are building a Google Notebook importer.

We intend to support as much Google Notebook information as possible (notebooks, sections, labels, and notes).

It's pretty funny that we could have it done by now if only we listened to a user who requested it only 5 days ago saying:

"If there's no way to import from google notebook or xml files, this really isn't very useful for me."

She didn't tell me she could tell the future! ; )

Google Notebook No More?

We were just informed of the closing of Google Notebook.

UberNote has often been compared to Google Notebook. Since UberNote began, we've had praise from users that have chosen us over our Google competitor. At the same time, I'm sure we have had users choose Google Notebook over UberNote.

We would love to find out how we can be a new home for Google Notebook fans.

UberNote has been publicly launched for about a year and we are happy to see many returned users and new account registrations.

UberNote has a few resolutions and goals for 2009:

1. Continue to listen to our users
2. Break out and do some innovative things with notes
3. Launch premium services
